Codecs

The AVC (H.264) and AAC technology are considered the most advanced video and audio compression methods available today.

AVC (H.264) has been adopted as the key compression scheme for high definition digital television broadcast as well as for the next generation digital video discs - Blu-Ray. AVC achieves comparable or higher image quality than MPEG-2 codec at half the datarate or VC-1 codec at same bitrates.

MPEG-4 AAC is a new kind of audio standard that integrates many different types of audio coding such as natural and synthetic sound, low bitrate and high-quality delivery or speech and music. It's advanced high-efficiency profiles are up to twice as efficient when compared to the well-known MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer 3) standard.

Overview

Our H.264 codec complies to the ISO/IEC 14496-10 standard and is capable of producing Main Profile @ Level 5.1 bitstreams. This allows for a wide range of applications ranging from low-bitrate mobile devices video to high definition digital television.

When compared to previous codecs the H.264 codec is composed of the same elementary functional blocks but each of them has been dramatically advanced. Block-based motion compensation has been essential for all modern video codecs. In contrast to previous codecs the H.264 codec can divide motion blocks into several partitions of various sizes ranging from 4x4 up to 16x16 and can describe stationary blocks with fewer bits as one big partition and small dynamically moving blocks as many 4x4-sized partitions. Further more H.264 can derive coded frames from multiple past and future frames and maximum temporal redundancy can exploited.

The latest flavor of AAC - the HE-AAC v2 extends the AAC performance by adding spectral band replication (SBR) and parametric stereo (PS) coding tools and can achieve CD quality at datarates of 48 kbps.
